Back pain is very common. It can be felt anywhere along your back. The chance of developing lower back pain increases, when people get older. Back pain can be caused by a number of different reasons and can affect people of any age. It can be an uncomfortable and devastating result from any recent injury to the back, and some medical conditions such as degenerative disk disease.

Lower back pain may be associated with the bony lumbar spine, discs between the spines, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, lower back muscles, abdominal and pelvic internal organs. Pain in the upper back may be due to disorders of the vein, tumors in the chest, and spine inflammation.

BACK PAIN MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH:

  • Inflammation or swelling on the back
  • Persistent back pain
  • Pain down the legs
  • Weight loss and fever
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Numbness around the genitals, anus, and buttocks

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

You should seek immediate medical help if you have back pain or experience any numbness or tingling sensation that does not improve with rest, after an injury or fall, and when there is a weakness with fever and unexplained weight loss. Neurologists who specialize in treating back pain which is caused by the spinal cord, muscles, or nervous system will examine your back and evaluate your ability to sit, stand, walk, and lift your legs. If there is any specific condition that is causing your back pain, the doctor recommends a number of tests, such as X-ray, MRI or CT scans, Blood tests, Bone Scan, and Electromyography (EMG), to help to differentiate the cause of your pain, and then work with you to create a treatment plan.

TREATMENT OF BACK PAIN

For much severe back pain, the pain gets better with a few weeks of home treatment whereas, for many, the pain doesn’t go away for a long period. OTC pain relievers, muscle relaxants, topical pain relievers, antidepressants, the use of heat, and other therapies are recommended by a doctor.  If your back pain lasts for a few days without improvement, see the doctor immediately.
